Blog Archives: Hosting with 1and1
My server hosted with 1and1 was down for more than 16 hours yesterday. I have a three year free package from them which I'm quite happy with its features. But yesterday's outage was very long and I didn't receive any response to my support requests at all. When they claim a 99.9% uptime, it means that it should not suffer more than 365*24*0.001=8.76 hours of downtime. But my server was down for more than 32hours last year, which is like three to four times 1and1's guaranteed value. I guess the situation should be better for paid customers.

Update: I just received an email from 1and1 apologizing for down time and that it took them 4 hours to solve the problem, which probably means they didn't know about the server being down for the other 12 hours. It is good anyway that they respond to non-paying customers.
Update 2 (Nov 20, 2005): 1and1 miscalculated my bandwidth usage and they are not answering my support emails for the last days. Check Snook's review on the same issue too.
Update 3: Problems seem to be fixed and everything works fine.

I work at AccuPages Web Hosting. Lots of Clients are switching to AccuPages.com lately from 1and1. It took us a while to figure out why this is happening. We believe that 1and1 seem to have grown to an extent that some of its clients are now being queued up on support tickets and not receiving the same service they used to get in the past.
Well, I guess as long as 1and1 offers these great prices they will keep the lead. AccuPages prices are too high to move to: 60 bucks per month for 1.5GB space and less features than 1and1's 20 bucks for 150GB space!
so true. it's the price of 1and1, that's the only thing that allows them to draw lots of customers a day.
I've had my travel pictures site hosted with 1And1 for the past 3.5 years with no downtime (that I know of). (I work on it almost every day.)
I bought a second package because I was running out of my "total # of allowed files" on the first package. My site has tons of tiny files but I will never use all the BW and HD space that the package allows.
This morning, I go to work on the sites on my 2nd package and they are all down. :(
One of them is http://www.X.com and it says 403 FORBIDDEN. :(
Overall, I can't complain too much about 1And1. I'm hoping this outage won't last too long. I'm going to contact support. Wish me luck.
